RefWorks - Importing References from Another RMS

You can import existing references from any reference management service. You can import directly from another RefWorks account or from your Mendeley account.

To import from a RMS (other than RefWorks or Mendeley), export them from that service to one of the following formats: NLM PubMed, RefWorks Tagged, RefWorks XML, RIS, or Thomson Reuters format.

  • Zotero: Select the references and select 'Export Selected Items' from the right-click menu. Select the 'RIS format' and save the file.
  • EndNote: (1) Select Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager and select 'RefMan (RIS) Export'. (2)  In your library, select the references, select File > Export, and save the file as 'RefMan (RIS) Export'.

Within RefWorks Select 'Add > Import references'. The 'Import from another reference manager' page appears.

  • To import from legacy RefWorks or Mendeley, select the relevant action and select 'Authorize'. The login page of the relevant citation manager appears. Log into the citation manager.
  • Otherwise, drag and drop the file containing the list of exported references or select a file from your computer, select the file, select the relevant format (and, for RIS or Thomson Reuters formats, select the closest matching database), and select 'Import'. Your references are copied from the other service to RefWorks.

RefWorks - Share Projects

  • Projects are separate reference collections with unique folders, reference, tags etc.
  • This is useful for users working on multiple research projects, with different groups of people - where the ability to isolate references and folders within a Project is needed.
  • Your RefWorks account has a default 'Untitled Project'. You can change the name and create new projects in the 'Manage Projects' page.

  • The 'Share This Project' option is available within the same menu. Sharing Projects with others makes them a 'Project Owner' and gives them full permissions within the Project, including adding, deleting, and modifying folders and references.

RefWorks - Tool Add-Ons

RefWorks offers add-ons to help with your research project.

Select 'Tools' from the ribbon at the top of the page.

  • 'Save to RefWorks' plug-in. By installing this in your browser, you will be able to save a reference or article including full-text (if available) from any website into your RefWorks account.

Save to RefWorks Plugin

If you cannot see the 'Save to RefWorks' plug-in on your Favourites toolbar on the Edge browser. Select the ellipses on the right-hand side of your toolbar. Select 'Favourites' then the ellipses again on that menu, and choose 'Show favourites bar: Always'.

MS Word - RefWorks Citation Manager

MS Word - RefWorks Citation Manager 1

We recommend that you use RefWorks from your SRUC Office 365 account, using the MS Word application. This should ensure that the 'RefWorks Citation Manager' Add-In is already installed for you.

Once you have opened MS Word, select the 'RCM' tab and the following icon should appear underneath your menu options at the top of the page:

If you select the icon, the RCM pane opens on the right side of the document.

Log in to RefWorks. Synchronizing data with your RefWorks account. This may take a few moments, especially on your first login.

Once you are logged in, the sidebar updates with your references with an icon to the Main Menu on the top left

...and a refresh icon on the bottom right:

The citation style that we use at SRUC is 'Cite Them Right, 12th edition - Harvard'.

MS Word - RefWorks Citation Manager 4

To add a citation within your MS Word document, simply left-click your icon where you want the citation to appear, then select from your RefWorks Citation Manager pane on the right of the page. Hover over the source you require, and select the 'Cite This' button.

Note - if you notice an error within the citation, you can edit this here. However, it will not update within the entry in your main RefWorks account. You will need to do this separately.
